چکیده

However, they have low open-circuit voltages and typically cannot be made optically thick while maintaining high fi ll factors. [ 4,5 ] For comparison, the best silicon solar cell has a bandgap of 1.1 eV and an open-circuit voltage of 0.71 V, corresponding to a difference between the bandgap and qV oc of only 0.40 eV. [ 1 ] In contrast, one of the best performing organic solar cells, PTB7:PC 71 BM, has an optical gap of 1.65 eV and an open-circuit voltage of 0.76 V, a difference of 0.89 eV. [ 6 ] The lower qV oc of organic solar cells relative to their optical gaps directly translates into lower power conversion effi ciencies. [ 7 ]

Role of the Charge-Transfer State in Reduced Langevin Recombination in Organic Solar Cells: A Theoretical Study

Reduced Langevin recombination has been observed in organic solar cells (OSCs) for many years, but its origin is still unclear. A recent work by Burke et al. (Adv. Energy Mater.2015, 5, 1500123-1) was inspired by this reduced Langevin recombination, and they proposed an equilibrium model of charge-transfer (CT) states that correlates the open-circuit voltage of OSCs with experimentally availabl...

Molecular Electronic Coupling Controls Charge Recombination Kinetics in Organic Solar Cells of Low Bandgap Diketopyrrolopyrrole, Carbazole, and Thiophene Polymers

Low-bandgap diketopyrrolopyrrole- and carbazole-based polymer bulk-heterojunction solar cells exhibit much faster charge carrier recombination kinetics than that encountered for less-recombining poly(3-hexylthiophene). Solar cells comprising these polymers exhibit energy losses caused by carrier recombination of approximately 100 mV, expressed as reduction in open-circuit voltage, and consequen...

Restricted charge recombination process in PbS quantum dot sensitized solar cells by different coating cycles of ZnS films

The relatively low power conversion efficiency (PCE) of quantum dot sensitized solar cells (QDSSCs) is attributed to charge recombination at the interfaces. Charge recombination process could be suppressed by coating the QD layer with a wide band gap semiconductor such as ZnS, which acts as a blocking layer between the QDs and hole transport material (HTM). In present study, to improve PCE of P...

Photosynthesis-inspired device architectures for organic photovoltaics

Organic semiconductor photovoltaics offer a promising route to low-cost, scalable, emissions-free electricity generation. However, achieving higher power conversion efficiencies is critical before these devices can play a larger role in our future energy generation landscape. Organic photovoltaic devices are currently limited by two primary challenges: (1) a trade-off between light absorption a...

Fabrication of Organic Solar Cells with Branched Cauliflower-Like Nano Structures as a Back Electrode Replicated from a Natural Template of Cicada Wing Patterns

Nanostructures of noble metal materials have been used in organic solar cells for enhancement of performance and light trapping. In this study, we have introduced branched silver cauliflower-like nanopatterns as sub-wavelength structured metal grating in organic solar cells. Self-assembled fabrication process of branched nanopatterns was carried out on a bio-template of cicada wing nanonipple a...
